Empowering Adolescent Girls and Young Mothers

At Komera Initiative, we provide education, support, and hope for a brighter future

Mukarukundo Jeannette

Jeannette is one of four siblings and was born out of wedlock. She was raised by her mother's husband. Jeannette's education was limited to Primary 6. After completing her primary education, she had a relationship with a childhood boyfriend. They had sex only once, using a condom, but unfortunately, it failed, resulting in Jeannette becoming pregnant. Despite their precautions, the condom did not prevent the pregnancy, highlighting the risks associated with even the most careful use of contraception.

When Jeannette informed her boyfriend about the pregnancy, he refused to acknowledge the child and prevented her from meeting his family. Throughout her pregnancy and after giving birth, Jeannette never received any support from the father of her child. This lack of support has added to her challenges as a young mother, including financial hardship and social isolation.

Currently, Jeannette does not know the whereabouts of the father of her child or his family.
