Mountain gorilla

Mountain gorillas are Rwanda’s most iconic primates, known for their deep emotional intelligence and strong family bonds. They are a global symbol of conservation success.

Habitat

They live in the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park, nestled within the Virunga Mountains. Rwanda is one of the only three countries in the world where mountain gorillas can be found in the wild.

Conservation Note

Thanks to Rwanda’s strong eco-tourism and conservation efforts, mountain gorilla populations have been steadily increasing. Responsible trekking permits support both the animals and surrounding communities.

Fun Facts

  • Gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans.
  • They live in tight family groups led by a silverback male.
  • A gorilla can climb trees and use tools like sticks or leaves!
