African Elephant

The African elephant is the largest land mammal on Earth and a gentle giant of Rwanda’s landscapes. With their impressive tusks and deep intelligence, elephants are admired and respected across Africa.

Habitat

In Rwanda, African elephants roam mainly in Akagera National Park, where they play a key role in shaping the environment—clearing paths, spreading seeds, and maintaining ecological balance.

Conservation Note

Rwanda’s elephant population is protected under national conservation programs. While once threatened by poaching, they now thrive under stronger enforcement and awareness campaigns.

Fun Facts

  • Elephants can weigh up to 6,000 kg (13,000 lbs)!

  • They use their trunks for breathing, grabbing, and even hugging.

  • Elephants are incredibly social and intelligent, mourning lost companions.
